Yellowstone Supervolcano Ashfall Impact

This project was all about choosing the proper projected coordinate system for a particular area and how that impacts geospatial analysis. It focused on the differences between allowing ArcGIS Pro to automatically display a feature layer in a projection other than its native projection, and how that may visually look right, when it comes to precise measurements and spatial analysis, errors begin to appear. In addition, we worked on determining what the intended projection of a data layer was when there is an error in the define projection or it is entirely undefined. In creating the map below, I defined customized parameters for the USA Contiguous Equidistant Conic projection to minimize distortion around the study area as much as possible. From there it was as simple as selecting features based on spatial attributes and using the cartographic skills I developed in the Fall to put together a clear and intuitive map layout, seen below.
